Your gut is your second brain

Updated: Mar 20, 2020

Your gastrointestinal tract is a complex microbial ecosystem, and its influence is such that it is frequently referred to as your "second brain". So when it comes to your moods, decisions and behaviour, the brain in your head is not the only one doing the thinking!

Embedded in the wall of the gut, the enteric nervous system (ENS) is responsible for controlling digestion. However, it also plays an important role in our physical and mental well-being.

Here is an interesting fact...

95% of your serotonin (a neurotransmitter associated with mood control) is produced within your gut. So not only can your emotions influence your gut, but the reverse is also true.
